Jon Lord, Keyboard and founder of Deep Purple, dies at age 71
British rocker Jon Lord, former keyboardist for the band Deep Purple, has died. He was 71 years old.
A statement on Lord’s official website says the Leicester, England-born musician suffered a fatal pulmonary embolism in London on Monday after a long battle with pancreatic cancer.
Lord co-wrote some of Deep Purple’s most famous tunes, including “Smoke on the Water,” and later had a successful solo career following his retirement from the band in 2002.
Last year, Lord told fans he was “fighting cancer and will therefore be taking a break from performing while getting the treatment and cure”.
In a message on his website dated August 9th, 2011, he added: “I shall of course be continuing to write music – in my world it just has to be part of the therapy – and I fully expect to be back in good shape next year.”
The statement posted on Lord’s website said he died “surrounded by his loving family.”

Mientras que los integrantes de Dream Theater no han querido revelar la identidad de su nuevo baterista, Mike Portnoy, -ex baterista y miembro fundador- dio a conocer su nuevo proyecto musical.
Al lado de Steve Morse, guitarrista de Deep Purple, Portnoy conformó un nuevo grupo – el cual aún no tiene nombre- en el que también contará con la participación de Neal Morse de Spock’s Beard, el vocalista Casey McPherson de Alpha Rev, y el bajista Dave LaRue, de Dixie Dregs.
Al respecto, Neal Morse dijo que “estamos emocionados por el proyecto, pero hay un poco de misterio en cuando a lo que vendrá. La idea es hacer más canciones y no tantos riffs, como uno esperaría, pero aún, claro, teniendo los elementos musicales que la gente como Steve Morse, Dave LaRue, Mike Portnoy y yo podemos aportar.”
Morse agregó que han estado trabajando en el estudio durante al menos 10 días , “veremos qué pasa y si tenemos las bases suficientes para un álbum, y después continuaremos. Todas son personas muy ocupadas, así que el tiempo nos llevará hasta el final real y al lanzamiento del disco”.
