Red Hot Chili Peppers returned to the stage for the first time in four years

Rockers the Red Hot Chili Peppers returned to the stage for the first time in four years on Wednesday (27Jul11) with a secret outdoor concert under the stars.

The Under the Bridge hitmakers staged an intimate gig on the lawn at the Henry Miller Memorial Library in the Big Sur, California, attended by just 300 people, most of whom were friends of the band.

It was the group’s first live performance with new guitarist Josh Klinghoffer, who replaced John Frusciante, and the rockers thrilled the audience by treating them to a special preview of songs from their forthcoming album, I’m With You.

The set opened with new track Monarchy of Roses and alternated between classic hits like Give It Away, to fresh cuts such as Ethiopia, Look Around and Factory of Faith.

And the show proved to be a big night for the music veterans.

Frontman Anthony Kiedis told the crowd, “Every other song is a new thing, things we’ve never played before. It’s just a little exciting for us.”

But the gig was not without its problems – the breezy conditions took its toll on Kiedis’ voice, prompting Klinghoffer to take over on vocals on a series of songs towards the end of the set, and they were engulfed in darkness for a few minutes when the stage lighting suddenly cut out.

The Red Hot Chili Peppers are due to play two more secret shows before embarking on a tour of Asia.

They will release I’m With You 08.30.2011

Lipstick junkie be funky all he wanty
she came back wearing a smile
Look-alike someone drug me
they wanted to unplug me
No one in here is on trial
Its just a turn-around

And we go
Oh
well and we go
Oh oh oh oh

Tic-toc, I want to rock you like the 80s
Cock-blocking isn’t allowed.
Tug boat sheila is into memorabilia
Who said three is a crowd?
We better get it on the go

Chours

Hey, now
We’ve gotta make it rain somehow
She told me to
And show me what to do
Oh Maggie makes it in her cloud

I said , hey, now
We gotta make it rain somehow
She told me to
And show me what to do
She knows how, to make it loud

Rain dance maggie advances to the final
Who knew that she had the goods?
Little did I know her body was one delicious vinyl
To your neck of the woods
I want to lick a little bit

Chours:

Hey, now
We’ve gotta make it rain somehow
She told me to
And show me what to do
Oh Maggie makes it in her cloud

You got the wrong girl
But not for long girl
Its in a song girl
Cos I’ll be gone girl

Chorus

Hey, now
We’ve gotta make it rain somehow
She told me to
And show me what to do
Oh Maggie makes it in her cloud

I said
Hey now
I want to rock this valley crowd
She told me to
And told me what to do
She knows how to make it loud

But not for longer
Its in a song girl
Cos I’ll be gone bye bye yeah
bye bye girl
bye bye
girl
bye bye
girl
bye bye

Flea: “I didn’t think I’d want to continue the band without him(Frusciante)”

In a new interview centered on Red Hot Chili Peppers‘ upcoming album, ‘I’m With You,’ bassist Flea admits that he initially thought it might be best to break up the band than continue on after guitarist John Frusciante left the group.

However, once the initial shock of Frusciante’s departure wore off, Flea says his passion for the band won over in the end. “[Frusciante] just gave us so much as a songwriter, as a player, as a human being … and I didn’t think I’d want to continue the band without him,” divulges Flea in an interview with Stereogum. “[However] I just felt so much love for the band, and love for [singer] Anthony [Kiedis], I just wanted to keep doing it.”

Once RHCP decided to continue on, Flea was the one who approached Josh Klinghoffer to replace Frusciante. “We still sound like the Red Hot Chili Peppers, but it’s really a lot different,” explains Flea. “Josh is a very textural, poetic, and sublime musician, and just comes at it from a different angle than anything that we’ve had before. So, we’re just reacting to him, and it makes us play different, so we’re just going a different way, and it’s great.”

Red Hot Chili Peppers will release ‘I’m with You’ on Aug. 30. The band has scheduled a number of overseas tour dates, which kick off with an Aug. 9 show in Hong Kong.
